  • Started working with the ‘Defence Career Partnering’ to employ service personnel
  • Participated in WWF’s Earth Hour for the first time
  • Established a Sustainability Committee in Carillion Canada
  • Celebrated 10 years of working with the UK Wildlife Trusts
  • Provided 111 Business Action on Homelessness placements
  • Our joinery workshop in Oman achieved FSC certification
  • Carillion Middle East and North Africa won the Construction Week CSR Award for the second year in a row
  • Developed our new 2020 sustainability strategy

2009

  • 100% UK and MENA business accredited to ISO 14001
  • Launched major carbon reduction programme across the Group
  • Achieved Platinum status in BITC’s Corporate Responsibility Index
  • Carillion Middle East and North Africa won a Roads and Transport Authority award for Sustainable Transport
  • Signed the UK WRAP Halving Waste to Landfill commitment
  • Submitted our first full response to the Carbon Disclosure Project

2008

  • Acquired Alfred McAlpine plc
  • Top of sector in BITC Corporate Responsibility Index for second year running
  • Received The Sunday Times Best Green Companies award for large and medium-sized companies with high environmental impact
  • The FTSE and Dow Jones indices changed Carillion’s Industry Benchmark Classification from heavy construction to business support services
  • Signed up to the Ministry of Defence’s Sustainable Procurement Charter for the first time

2007

  • In top 20 most ethical UK firms, The Observer’s Good Company Guide
  • Sustainability Strategy wins two top CSR awards
  • First in sector to sign up to a UK Government scheme for the long-term unemployed
  • Calculated our first carbon footprint

2006

  • Sustainability applied: John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford
  • Acquired Mowlem plc
  • Set up Sustainability Excellence Model
  • Partnership with Business Action on Homelessness
  • Sustainable procurement: Flexible Framework adopted

2005

  • Tsunami response: patron of Registered Engineers for Disaster Relief

2004

  • Set up Community Policy and Community Engagement Strategy

2003

  • BITC Company of the Year
  • Held our first Annual Sustainability Week
  • 95% of UK business ISO 14001 accredited
  • Winner of BITC Impact on Society Award

2002

  • Sustainability applied: Great Western Hospital, Swindon
  • Established Sustainability Strategy Model
  • Joined BITC’s PerCent club, dedicating over 1% of profits to charitable and community causes
  • Established our first strategy sun diagram
  • Top of sector in BITC Corporate Responsibility Index
  • Set up stakeholder dialogue process

2001

  • Created our first Sustainability Policy
  • Carillion Natural Habitats Fund established with The Wildlife Trusts
  • First in sector to join the FTSE4Good Index for ethical investment

1999

  • Carillion demerged from Tarmac

  • Established partnerships with The Natural Step

1997

  • Joined the WWF-UK Timber Group

1995

  • Set up Independent Advisory Panel
  • Created our first Environment Policy
