During 2010 we established several plans to ensure the Group is collecting waste data. The final figure in this report includes our Canada business and our UK services contracts which were not included in our 2009 report.

All projects and contracts in the UK have a site waste management plan through which they are required to quantify waste produced and disposal methods. This is collated monthly and reported annually. In the Middle East, recycling centres have been installed on all project sites. All data is collated on a project basis and reported monthly. Canada appointed a national sub-contractor to meet all of its waste management needs in 2010. Waste data is collated in two ways dependent upon the contract agreement. The first is by direct measurement at Weigh Bridges and another is by skip estimation using conversion factors agreed with the environmental agency. In Canada the data is collected through a system called Weigh Bills which is similar to the UK system of Weigh Bridges.

Carbon emissions data is gathered and reported every quarter by an independent environmental company, SKM Enviros. Information gathered includes fuel, travel and energy consumption. Electricity and gas data is based on half-hourly meters or taken from invoices using meter readings, and is reported in kWh. Road vehicle fuel consumption is measured at pump and reported to Carillion from the fuel card providers. Travel data is calculated by the independent travel provider. Plant fuel data is based on expenditure and unit costs.

As a result of our work under CRC it has become evident that there are other data emissions sources that were not included in our footprint. This has resulted in an 8.5% increase to our 2010 carbon footprint report.

The revised 2010 footprint, which uses the most recent DEFRA/DECC emission factors, will form the basis for all future baselines as part of our new 2020 sustainability strategy.
