Environmental management

Effective environmental management helps us to reduce our impacts and those of our customers.

All our UK and Middle East and North Africa (MENA) operations have formal environmental management systems (EMS) certified to the ISO 14001 international standard. In Canada, Carillion’s Joint Venture, TWD Roads Management Inc., was certified to ISO 14001 in 2010, making it the first part of Carillion Canada to achieve certification. We have a programme to extend certification to other parts of Carillion Canada in 2011.

These management systems ensure that we have procedures, training and monitoring processes in place to manage our impacts. Our Environmental Policy (790 Kb) is also incorporated in every operation’s management system.

Our business units set environmental targets each year and performance is monitored quarterly. We raise employee awareness so that they can help us achieve our targets, through tailored training, Team Talks, project discussions, targeted emails and newsletters. In 2010, we also delivered a significant proportion of our training via web conferencing, thereby reducing our carbon footprint.

We identify environmental risks and mitigating actions within each project management plan. In 2010, our construction business identified the top five environmental risk areas: water pollution, waste management, impacts on wildlife, nuisance offences and compliance to the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC). In response, we delivered over 600 people hours of training and we set up a cross-functional group to manage compliance to the CRC.

In 2010, we did not receive any environmental prosecutions as a result of our work. From our central incident reporting helpline, we recorded two significant environmental incidents in the UK and one in MENA.
